THE CHINA-MADE COMAC C919 PASSENGER JET: A GIFT TO LOW-COST AIRLINE OPERATORS.
The entrance of the COMAC C919 passenger jets into the global airline market is a great gift for airline operators with low-cost business models. Being powered by CFM International LEAP turbofan engines, and having a carrying capacity of 156 to 168 passengers in a usual operating configuration of up to 3,000 neutical miles (5,555km), the C919 passenger jet will rival the Boeing737 MAX and Airbus A320neo in the coming years. It will appeal to both high- and low-cost airline operators around the globe.
There is no doubt that China has yet again proven that it is a global leader and force to reckon with in the global marketplace. The global jet market, estimated to be worth $2 trillion over the next 20 years, offers C919 an opportunity to compete and win big especially in the emerging markets of Asia and Africa.
The orders for C919 passenger jets are up and increasing. Over 450 aircraft have been ordered by mainly airline operators in the home market. Orders have been limited to the home market because C919 has not been certified by regulators in the United States and Europe, and maybe Africa too.
Certainly, after its sixth test flight and eventual launch into the global jet market, C919 passenger jets will form part of the fleet of many airline operators. I hope it becomes a "staple" airliner.
